Boys Varsity Swimming vs. Nantucket HS School

Game Date
Jan 29, 2013
Score
WARRIORS: 77
NANTUCKET HIGH SCHOOL: 93

The Nauset boys swim team suffered a disappointing loss to the Nantucket Whalers at home Tues night Jan. 29th. In what should have been a moment of celebration, first place and a state sectional qualifying 200 medley relay time, the boys were disqualified for a relay take off violation. The boys retaliated by taking first place victories in 5 events but it wasn't enough as the Whalers won 6 events- 3 of which were relays giving them a higher point advantage in those races. Despite losing, the Nauset boys went down fighting and had a significant amount of personal best times throughout the meet.

Tri-captain Emmett Draz led the Warriors in points, taking 2 individual wins (200 free, 100 back) and also posting superior splits in both the 200 medley and 400 free relays. John McLoughlin recorded a personal best time in his first place finish in the 500 free, while Jake Avery swam hard in the 100 breaststroke grabbing first place and beating Nantuckets Tavio Goncalves by over 3 seconds. The race of the night however, went to tri-captain Nolan O'Connor. With top butter flyer Seth Nowack out sick, O'Connor was under pressure and had to rise to the occasion for his team. He did just that, overtaking the field by going out hard in the first 50, and maintaining in the second- never throwing in the towel! He posted a career best time of 1:11.61. In addition, Zach Altneu posted a pb in the same race good enough for a 4th place finish and 2 points for the team.

Other swimmers going the distance and swimming great times were Ben Davies in the 200 and 500 free, Nick Smith in the 500 free, Kevin Johnson and Silas Watkins in the 100 free, Hannu Pechukas and Sam McGough in the 50 free, Kevin Johnson in the 100 back, Sam Spiegal in the IM and 100 Breaststroke and Rob Whitaker in the 200 IM. Head turning performances in relays went to Sam McGough, Hannu Pechukas and Silas Watkins.
